14 Truths High Achievers Understand About Productivity
March 29, 2024
last updated:
In the fast-paced world of entrepreneurship where time is an all-to-precious commodity, productivity is a key differentiator between success and failure. High achievers understand this fundamental truth and continuously strive to optimize their productivity to stay ahead in the game. But what sets them apart? What do these driven individuals know about productivity that sets them on a path to success? I’ve compiled what I believe are the top 12 mindset beliefs that high achievers employ to maximize their productivity.
Read on, friend, and let me know if you agree in the comments below!
Table of Contents
Truth #1: High Achievers Know that Mission Clarity is Key
High achievers all know that productivity begins with clarity of purpose. Who am I, and what was I put on this planet to do? Without a personal mission, it’s hard to sustain motivation. You have to know what you’re trying to accomplish (i.e. what you’re working towards) before you can be productive in that effort.
High achievers meticulously define their goals and priorities to ensure that every single action they take aligns with their overarching objective. In other words, what they say and what they do adds up. By setting clear goals, they create a roadmap for success and eliminate distractions that derails progress. Any high achiever knows how to stay focused on what truly matters – the mission – and delegates the rest to someone else.
Sometimes, it takes a bit of time to find and refine y0ur mission, so try not to feel too frustrated if you don’t have the answer yet. It will come to you when the time is right.
Truth #2: High Achievers Understand the Power of Visualization
Without a vision to go along with the above-mentioned mission, you won’t get very far. High achievers know this. You have to be able to see yourself at the top before you can get there. If you can’t (or won’t?) close your eyes for a few minutes to do try, how can you expect to clear bigger hurdles down the line?
So let me ask you this: Do you know what you want, and can you imagine yourself getting it? If not, that’s your starting point. Planning your success is what makes it exciting.
Truth #3: High Achievers Know To Take Action Without Having All The Answers
Far too many people are concerned with all the “how-to’s” of accomplishing their goals before they even get started, but here’s the thing: those “how-to’s” won’t reveal themselves until you start.
A high achiever is often what others would call a “risk taker” because they understand the power of visualization and taking action towards it quickly – before they have all the answers. They simply trust the process with optimism and confidence in themselves that they can handle whatever comes their way. That’s a winning mindset, and productivity follows.
Truth #4: High Achievers Understand the Power of Small Steps
Because they take fast action, high achievers know that they can’t accomplish everything they want to get to in one shot. They are not concerned with the idea of “overnight success” or “going viral” because they know that’s not a sustainable solution. Rather than becoming overwhelmed by the magnitude of their goals, high achievers break them down into manageable tasks and focus on small, actionable steps every day. Productivity flows through that progress. Monumental success is always the culmination of consistency and commitment to excellence, and they’re not afraid to put in the work.
All high achievers with a mission and a vision are playing the long game. They firmly believe in the transformative power of small steps because they understand that there is a longer journey in front of them, and whatever progress you can make TODAY is excellent progress. Micro goals for the win.
Truth #5: High Achievers are Highly Self-Aware & Committed to Growth
Building on these last two ideas, high achievers recognize that stagnation is the enemy of productivity. They are committed to lifelong learning, personal development and growth, constantly seeking new knowledge and skills to stay ahead of the curve. They are always in trouble-shooting mode, looking for ways to improve and prevent and leaks of time and energy. They accept facts for what they are – pure information about how to improve – without emotional attachment to a specific outcome of those facts. They focus on the right work, whether it’s hard or easy, with an equal amount of gusto. It’s not always fun, but it gets the job done.
By investing in self-improvement, high achievers increase their efficiency and effectiveness all around. Whether it’s reading books, attending workshops, or seeking mentorship, high achievers are relentless in their pursuit of excellence. Taking an honest look at yourself is hard, yes, but it’s just what works. Fix those blindspots.
Truth #6: High Achievers Make Incredibly Fast Decisions
When you hesitate or waver in making decisions, you create bottlenecks that halts progress and stifles momentum. Indecisiveness not only wastes valuable time, but also drains mental energy that could be better invested. High achievers all know that indecisiveness kills productivity. They often don’t dwell on whether they are making the right or wrong decision – they just make a decision. In minutes. And then whatever happens, happens.
If you can’t make fast decisions, you won’t ever be at peak productivity.
Truth #7: High Achievers Expect and Embrace Failure
Building on the idea of decisiveness is the expectation of failure. High achievers not only expect it, they embrace it. Failure is a prerequisite for success and it only leads to the refinement of whatever goal is in front of them. Bumps in the road are part of the journey and giving up is not an option.
Trying to avoid failure is actually delaying success. Instead of dwelling on past mistakes and blaming themselves for not being perfect, high achievers reflect and log the takeaways from every experience. They know that there is no right or wrong decision – it’s only an illusion – because when things don’t go as expected, those results becomes the fuel for the next attempt. This is based on that keen growth mindset, which is so great to have because it means you can’t lose. Imagine that.
Truth #8: High Achievers Know that Productivity is About More Than Time
Productivity is about having a holistic approach to efficiency and effectiveness. In other words, time is not the only factor. It’s just one factor. Working longer hours doesn’t mean you’re necessarily getting more things done. High achievers know this, so they prioritize their well-being to get enough rest and relaxation to fuel themselves. Whether it’s through meditation, exercise, or simply taking breaks throughout the day, they prioritize self-care to avoid burnout and sustain their momentum in the long run.
True productivity is about optimizing not just the quantity of tasks completed but also the quality of the outcomes, and you can create impact even when you’re not feeling your best. Productivity requires nurturing both the professional and personal aspects of your life, which is why I teach holistic productivity in my Mindful Monday Mapping framework. Anyone who embraces the idea of comprehensive view of productivity (i.e. having a spacious calendar and some work-life balance) will get very far.
Truth #9: High Achievers Limit Their Exposure to Negativity
High achievers are keenly aware of the detrimental impact that negativity can have on their productivity and overall well-being. They understand that surrounding themselves with negative people drain their energy, dampen their motivation, and hinder their ability to focus on their goals. As a result, they tend to have very small and carefully curated friend circles. Toxic environments and/or pessimistic attitudes are not wanted and cut off swiftly if and when they show up.
High achievers prioritize spending time with individuals who uplift and inspire them, seeking out positive and supportive relationships that fuel their growth and success. Additionally, high achievers cultivate a positive internal dialogue, practicing self-awareness and mindfulness to counteract any negative thoughts or emotions that may arise. By proactively managing their environment and mindset, they create what can only be described as a personal shield that blocks anything counter-productive. This helps them to stay focused, motivated, and become more resilient over time.
Truth #10: High Achievers Know How to Proactively Choose Positivity
Opposite to the previous point, high achievers firmly believe in the power of their minds and and know that they can choose positivity in any given situation. Even if there are moments where it’s appropriate to feel other emotions, they know how not to dwell on them. They. Move. On. Yes, external circumstances may be beyond out control at times, but we all have the power to choose how we respond to them, and high achievers are masters at self-management.
By adopting a positive and proactive mindset, high achievers cultivate resilience, creativity, and perseverance, enabling them to overcome obstacles and achieve their goals with unwavering determination. They understand that mindset is not just a passive trait but an active choice, and they consciously choose optimism, resourcefulness, and determination to propel themselves toward greatness. Your attitude, self-talk, and perspective will always play a crucial role in determining your productivity. Learn to grow your capacity for positivity, and watch your productivity soar!
Truth #11: High Achievers are Highly Punctual
Punctuality is a cornerstone of respect, both for yourself and for others, and high achievers know this. They view punctuality not just as a matter of timeliness but as a reflection on their commitment to excellence and professionalism. By showing up on time (and often early before everyone else), they demonstrate reliability, which in turn fosters trust and leads to better and more powerful collaborations.
Showing up prepared and on time showcases self-discipline and accountability, which are both essential traits for success. Time is a very valuable resource, and it should be treated with the utmost respect. Are you on time for success? Or will you miss the boat?
Truth #12: High Achievers Distinguish Between Urgency and Importance
High achievers know how to separate urgent from import. Urgent tasks are those that demand immediate attention, and important tasks are those that create impact (i.e. contribute significantly to long-term goals and success). High achievers prioritize their efforts based on this distinction, and allocate time and resources accordingly.
You have to recognize true emergencies (which are rare), and not confuse it with other people trying to push their agenda onto you. High achievers don’t succumb reactively to urgency at the expense of already scheduled tasks – they remain proactively focused on what they have to do for the day (like we teach in The Bookend Approach). This lets you navigate responsibilities with clarity and purpose, thereby maximizing your productivity.
Truth #13: High Achievers Are Highly Systematic
When you’re operating at the highest levels of excellence, there’s a lot happening in your world, so in order to keep up, you have to be highly systematized. That means recognizing what systems are in place as support you, and even more importantly, quickly spotting when one of those systems break down (like we teach you in Creative Systems Architect). If (when) that happens, fast action and decision-making skills are what saves the day.
When you have the right systems in place – whether it’s platforms, people, or policies – you don’t have to hold it all together by yourself. That’s key because there’s just no other way to get to the top. Without systems, you will burn out, and that’s just not an option for someone with a mission.
Truth #14: High Achievers Recognize and Foster Leadership Skills in Others
Even if we are capable of doing things by ourselves, it doesn’t mean it’s the best idea…or the best use of time. High achievers are masters of delegation, outsourcing non-essential tasks to free up time for activities that actually drive results. Nothing wastes time more than working on tasks that could have been better handled by someone else.
True productivity extends beyond individual efforts; it requires cultivating leadership skills in others to harness collective potential. Your team is an integral part of your systems. High achievers recognize that empowering and inspiring those around them helps them become more productive too. Because of that, they actively mentor and coach team members, and provide frequent opportunities for growth. They actively foster a thriving ecosystem where everyone can live up to their full potential. You see, true leaders aren’t threatened by other leaders – they leverage collective power.
These Truths are Fundamental Productivity Skills
This article was written with leaders in mind, yes, but all of the bullet points hold true for anyone. In fact, they are all fundamental productivity skills… and productivity is a cornerstone of success. We should all continuously strive to optimize our productivity through clear goals, impact-oriented actions, and effective time management. Learn to embrace continuous learning, and you’ll be amazed at the results you get!
